A comprehensive set of notes and handouts is also provided.

INTRODUCTION to PANSOPS Course: 2 weeks.

This course is an introduction to:

• ICAO Procedure Design and Publication content;
• PANSOPS principles;
• Procedure segments;
• Aircraft performance;
• Trigonometry;
• Charting principles;
• Fix tolerances; and
• Obstacle and terrain data.

It is suitable for AIS/ANSP/Airline Operations/Aerodrome staff who require an understanding of the principles of the design of instrument flight procedures, the standards and content of Instrument Approach Charts and for staff moving into the field of instrument flight procedure design.

The IDS Procedure Design software tool, FPDAM, is used throughout the course to save valuable learning time, to demonstrate the use of advanced software tools and to confirm that manually drawn obstacle protection areas are drawn accurately.

Attendees should be:

• Proficient in English;
• Proficient in basic mathematics, especially trigonometry and SI/Non-SI conversions; and
• Have an aviation background in a field related to instrument flight procedures, especially as a pilot, navigator, Air Traffic Controller or aviation cartographer.

All attendees will receive a personal copy of ICAO DOC 8168 VOL II at the commencement of the course.

APPLIED PANSOPS Course: 2 weeks.

• Have completed an IDS Basic Course or have a sound knowledge of the basic principles of PANSOPS through locally based On-The-Job Procedure Design training;
• Be proficient in English;
• Be proficient in basic mathematics, especially trigonometry and SI/Non-SI conversions; and
• Have an aviation background in a field related to instrument flight procedures, especially as a pilot, navigator, Air Traffic Controller or aviation cartographer.

The course consists of the application of the specific criteria from PANSOPS, including:

• ILS;
• NDB and VOR;
• RNAV(GNSS);
• MSA;
• DEPARTURE PROCEDURES;
• HOLDING;
• VISUAL CIRCLING;
• HELICOPTER PROCEDURES; and
• RNP.
